Council
still collecting water charges

Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has collected e26m
in water charge arrears.
According to its annual report published last week,
the council has successfully pursued 94 per cent of
householders who were in arrears since the charges were
abolished in 1997.
The report also says that 80 per cent of eligible householders
have paid their bin charges with over e8m paid to the
Council for the charge last year.
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council collects refuse
from over 65,000 households. To the end of last year
37,500 of these also had green bins for recyclables.
The report also said that litter wardens issued 766
on-the-spot litter fines of e125 each last year and
of these, 127 people were prosecuted and 35 convicted.
New street cleansing equipment was put into service
including a heavy-duty green machine along with two
new mini-sweepers for narrow laneways, pavements and
cycle lanes. Around 4,000 tonnes of litter was removed
from the streets.
County Manager Derek Brady, said that the council was
grateful to the majority of householders who pay their
environmental waste charges.
