Tragic deaths being investigated

RESIDENTS in Annaville Park, Dundrum, were shocked and saddened by the tragic deaths of an elderly couple found dead in their home in the quite estate last week.

The couple, Thomas and Teresa MacGabhann, both aged 82 were rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital when they were found collapsed in the house. They were pronounced dead on arrival.

It’s believed the deaths may have been due to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a blocked flue.

Neighbours have said Mrs MacGabhann was taken to hospital after feeling unwell the day before the couple were found but that she returned home later that day.

It’s understood gardai investigating the matter are examining a possible fault with the central heating system.

Service work was being carried out on land at the back of the couple’s property which they had recently sold. A link between this and the deaths is also being investigated.

Bord Gais described the deaths as “very saddening and upsetting” and confirmed it was assisting in the inquiry.

“Bord Gáis was asked by the emergency services to assist in an enquiry into an incident at Annaville Park which resulted in two fatalities,” said a company spokesperson.

“An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing by the Garda and relevant authorities.

“Although Bord Gáis is not in a position to give any further details, early indications suggest that a blocked flue from a central heating system may have resulted in the incident.

“The blockage appears to have arisen as a result of recent construction activity. The results of the investigation will be made known in due course.”
