Fathers
and children
Dear
editor,
The
time is coming in this country when another taboo will
be unleashed into the pubic arena. It is the removal
of fathers from their children by the family law courts.
It is now time to stop the hurt of fathers and their
families and friends by creating a safe forum for fathers
and their children to tell society what has happened
to them and how they were removed to the outskirts of
their children's lives.
It is only when this hurt is out in the open and addressed
can we start to put in place new family friendly procedures
to deal with marriage and relationship breakdown.
Yours sincerely,
Paul J Coleman,
Grange Park Rise,
Raheny.
I
did vote on charges
Dear
editor,
Contrary
to the report in your edition of September 10 I did
vote on the motion on the agenda dealing with the collection
of waste.
In addition to voting with the Labour Party on that
motion I spoke against the changes to the legislation
recently introduced by the Minister for (sic) the Environment
and Local Government.
There were apparently a number of additional motions
not on the agenda that were discussed. There was no
indication however that these were also being put to
a vote given that they were either "out of order"
or impossible to be implemented. Accordingly, I was
dealing with a constituency matter when these may have
been moved.
My record of attendance at city council meetings since
my election in 1993 has been 100 per cent and like all
councillors occasionally I am outside the Chamber at
different times when matters on which I am not speaking
are being dealt with. To imply some sort of tactical
absence is unfair and wrong.
Yours etc,
Cllr Dermot Lacey,
Dublin
City Council.
Malahide
Traffic
Dear
editor,
Some
readers of your paper may remember Act 1 Townyard
Lane, Act II Bath Avenue and now I
reckon Act III in this farce is the best yet.
The would-be wizards of Fingal County Council traffic
management in my opinion have excelled themselves. Plans
have been conjured up but not yet implemented. This
will affect mainly those living in west Malahide.
When Act III is performed the residents of Seabury who
drive into the centre of Malahide might find their quickest
way home to be the Back Road past the Castle, via the
Fingerpost and Drynam, N1 to Seatown Roundabout, Swords,
Estuary Road eastward and then home. Why not use the
Malahide/Swords Road you ask? Wait and see the designer
congestion.
Yours etc,
Peter Stafford,
Dublin Road,
Malahide
Meet
us Minister
Dear
editor,
Lord
Mayor Royston Brady has lost all credibility and he
should reflect on his position as Lord Mayor. But Minister
McDowell should have met him because crime is out of
control in Dublin.
Over recent months we have seen an increase in gangland
killings, the drugs situation getting worse, anti-social
behaviour getting out of control, a rise in racism,
not enough emphasis on crime prevention and good policing
practice, and a complete lack of leadership from the
Minister for Justice and Law Reform.
We cannot even have a pint and a fag anymore under McDowells
nanny state.
It is also time for the Minister for Justice to get
tough with the real criminals in our society and time
for the Lord Mayor to stop grovelling.
Yours sincerely,
Deputy Finian McGrath (Ind),
Dail Eireann.
Your
money or your lights
Dear
editor,
What
have London 28/8/03, New York 17/8/03 and San Francisco
20/12/00 got in common? OK, they suffered severe power
cuts but that's not all.
Each of these cities privatised their electricity supply,
supposedly in
the interests of "competition and efficiency".
Result: private monopolies, workers fired, prices raised
and blackouts. Oh, and more donations to right-wing
parties from power companies.
This "your money or your lights" racket should
be remembered when the dim bulbs in Leinster House with
the privatisation fetish try to sell off our ESB.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Seán Marlow,
90 Willow Park Rd,
Dublin 11.
Declaration
of war
Dear
editor,
I
am absolutely outraged and appalled at the disgraceful
decision to jail Joe Higgins TD and Councillor Clare
Daly and also the extremely draconian decision to jail
Joe and Clare for a month.
What is really galling people is that Liam Lawlor only
got another week in prison despite the fact that Lawlor
has repeatedly been in contempt of court. It looks like
there's one law for the rich and another law for the
poor.
Whatever about the rights and wrongs of the contempt
of court rule, this certainly shows up the huge difference
between how judges react depending on the social class
and politics of the person before them.
Thankfully, if there's any 'good' that's come out of
this it is that I have never seen such a tidal wave
of pent up anger and frustration erupting before. I
have never seen people so angry in all my life.
I regard the imprisonment of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly
as a declaration of war against the working class people
of Ireland and should be regarded as such!
The arrest of 11 peaceful protesters in Blanchardstown
last week who were trying to ensure that Fingal County
Council collected all of the bins, is further prove
of this.

Sinn
Fein opposed to bin charges. . .
Dear
editor,
Sinn
Fein is one of the few parties fully opposed to the
bin charges as it is a tax upon a tax. People already
pay enough taxes to have the removal and deposit of
their waste taken care of for them.
Over the last few months, householders have been receiving
threatening letters from the council on these extra
charges. These letters are telling people to pay up
or else court action will be taken on this matter, to
try and frighten people into paying.
Now they are threatening people with refusal to collect
their bins. This will also backfire, as waste will be
left lying on our roadsides and laneways, which nobody
wants.
As we have recently seen, two public representatives
have been jailed and more protesters brought to court
over this tax. It just tells you something about our
laws when drug dealers can walk free and people are
imprisoned for standing up for what is right.
We have to stand strong together on this, as it is always
the working class who suffer the most on the introduction
of extra charges. We defeated the water rates and we
will defeat the bin charges,
Is mise le meas,
Robert Sargent,
Sinn Fein,
Crumlin/Kimmage
.
. .or are they?
Dear
editor,
The
left wing parties attitude to the waste charge continues
to range from grossly irresponsible to breathtakingly
hypocritical.
Sinn Feins attitude must fall into the latter
category. They have voted for bin charges in Sligo where
the highest charges exist.
Sinn Fein representatives in Dublin City continue to
show up and speak at anti-charges protests as seen in
Ringsend last week.
Their attendance at these protest meetings would be
understandable if they had shown up to the council meeting
and voted against the initial introduction of charges.
However, they did not deem it important enough then.
Now they are anti-charge cheerleaders. Would there be
a local election around the corner?
Yours sincerely
Councillor Chris Andrews
