IRISH Sky Sports News anchor and seasoned show jumper, Rachel Wyse, launched the 2018 Longines Irish Champions Weekend in the five-star Merrion Hotel last week.

Now in its fifth year, Longines Irish Champions Weekend is the pinnacle of the Irish Flat racing season and will see horses, trainers and jockeys compete at the highest level. With six Group One races and €4.8 million in prize money, this unique event is billed as the race where the best in world come to meet.

Ireland is set to host world-class horse racing, featuring outstanding style and entertainment at two internationally renowned racecourses, over one weekend – Leopardstown on Saturday 15 and the Curragh on Sunday, September 16.

No stranger to the equestrian scene, Rachel began her sports presenting career with the Show Jumping Ireland Premier Series in 2008 and 2009 which featured on Sky Sports, Horse & County TV and TG4.

Following this, she was offered a contract with Sky Sports News where she still resides. Outside of Wyse’s television career, she has competed internationally for Ireland as part of two European Showjumping Championships teams and has competed on the Irish National Circuit.

Longines Irish Champions Weekend is one of the biggest social and sporting events in Ireland. Style and fashion are at the heart of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. At both of Ireland’s premiere racecourses, all racegoers will get the chance to showcase their style credentials to be in with a chance to win the coveted Longines Prize for Elegance. Prizes include a Longines Record Collection timepiece and an overnight stay for two in the 5-Star Merrion Hotel.

The first of the two- day event will take place at Leopardstown and will feature some of the best flat racing in the world.

The Qipco Irish Champion Stakes and the Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes are the two Group 1 races on the opening day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend and share top-billing at Leopardstown.

A prestigious eight-race card offers a total prize fund of €2.45 million and features five group races, a new listed contest and two high-class handicaps each valued at €150,000. Racegoers will enjoy a fantastic day of fashion, top-class racing and live music from one of Ireland’s most popular bands – to be announced in the coming weeks.

Day two of the Longines Irish Champions weekend will see festivities move to the Curragh Racecourse on Sunday. This event is set to be full of fun for all the family with a designated family enclosure with plenty of activity for the kids - all this along with top class racing at the home of Ireland’s classics.

There are four Group 1 races on the eight-race card and pride of place goes to the Comer Group International Irish St Leger.

Speaking at the launch Rachel said: “I absolutely love horse-racing and have done since I was a child. I am delighted to be involved with Longines Irish Champions Weekend this year, a must for the annual social and sporting calendar.”
