Council welcomes new cathaoirleach

The Fianna Fail councillor Cormac Devlin has been elected as the cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

Cllr Devlin, who has represented the party in the Dún Laoghaire Electoral Area since 2004, was elected to the post at an Annual General Meeting of the council.

He takes over the reins from Cllr Barry Saul, who has represented Fine Gael in the Stillorgan Electoral Area since 2009.

Cllr Devlin (36), serves as a member of the Environment, Climate Change & Energy and Social Housing Strategic Policy committees.

He also serves on the Dún Laoghaire Area Committee, the Association of Irish Local Government, Dalkey Heritage Town Company, Joint Policing Committee, Mounttown Community Development and Southside Partnership DLR.

Cllr Devlin was educated at Harold Boy’s National School, Dalkey, Presentation College, Glasthule, the Institute of Public Administration and the Institute Public Relations.  He is married to Jennifer Allen Devlin and they have three young children.

Speaking at the AGM, the newly-elected cathaoirleach outlined his priorities for his term which include tackling the housing crisis, promoting civic engagement and supporting local enterprise throughout the county.

“I am honoured and privileged to be elected as cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown by my fellow councillors,” he said. “There is a long history and tradition attached to this position and I very much look forward to carrying out my role on behalf of the people of our county over the next 12 months.”

Cllr Shay Brennan was elected leas chathaoirleach at the meeting.

Cllr Brennan, a representative of the Fianna Fail Party, was elected in the Dundrum Electoral Area in 2014.

He was educated at Blackrock College and UCD, holds a BA in Economics and a MBS in Financial Services. His career spans a range of roles in the financial services industry.

Shay grew up in Dundrum and has been active in local politics, policy and community work for over two decades.
