A HOWTH Guide Leader who attended an international leadership training seminar in Switzerland recently has returned home all set to make a positive impact on her local community.

Emily Nangle was one of 11 Irish Girl Guides (IGG) members to participate in the Juliette Low Seminar, which took place simultaneously in 18 countries around the world.

The young Guide Leaders jetted off to hubs across the globe, including to Poland, Nigeria, Oman, Madagascar, Mexico and New York while three stayed in Ireland to participate in the Irish hub, which took place at Gormanston Park, County Meath.

The young women were among 500+ young Guide Leaders from around the world to take part in the international seminar, which is organised by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) every three years.

It was the first time for it to take place in different locations at the same time and IGG was honoured to be selected as one of the host nations.

The 500+ participants all followed the same Lead Out Loud programme to help them develop their leadership skills.

Each of them has pledged to share these skills with girls and young women in their own communities. Assuming each participant reaches 200 girls over the next two years, a total of 100,000 girls and young women will be empowered to also lead and bring about positive change in their communities.

Emily said taking part in the seminar at Our Chalet Guide World Centre near Adelboden in Switzerland was a great adventure.

“I arrived to the snowy Alps facing the unknown; I didn’t know anyone or what to expect,” she said. “It was nerve-racking, yet exciting. As everyone arrived, we soon became friends, sharing facts about our countries and our Guiding experiences.

“During the week we completed workshops based on the leadership mindsets, we did team-building games, a community project and we got a chance to play in the snow. We talked about gender barriers and how to overcome these issues.”

Emily said one of her favourite memories of the event was taking part in a campfire in the snow. “It was such a magical moment and something I’ve never experienced before,” she said.

“As it drew to a close, we all sang Taps (a song traditionally used to close Guide events) and each participant sang in their own language. It was amazing!”

Emily said she learned a great deal about leadership, gender equality and other cultures during the seminar and that she was looking forward to passing on this knowledge to other girls and young women in the local community.

Irish Girl Guides welcomes new youth members from age 5-30. Ladybirds are 5-7 years old, Brownies 7-10, Guides 10-14 and Senior Branch members aged 14-30.
