STUDENTS from a Northside kickboxing club headed to Birmingham recently to take part in the WKO European Kickboxing Championships.

Fight Club head instructor Ken Molloy and chief instructor Colm Brennan travelled along with students Barbara ‘The One’ Delaney, Nerys Molloy, Ryan O’Farrell, Cathal O’Hara and Keith Lacken, who all represented their country, their gym and themselves with courage, professionalism and heart.

Nerys Molloy, the only junior on the team, won her first fight to make it to the final. In the decider she proved too strong for her opponent, as she kept the pressure on from the start. At the final bell she was crowned WKO European Champion in the 11-12 years category.

Keith Lacken and Ryan O’Farrell won silver and bronze medals respectively. Cathal O’Hara faced a very tough opponent in his bout and unfortunately, the decision didn’t go his way this time.

Returning to competition after six years, Barbara Delaney, in boxing, didn’t disappoint. She stepped back into the ring as if was only yesterday since she last fought.

The Beaumont native dominated her opponent from the start before coming away with another European title.

Nerys Molloy returned to the ring again, this time for boxing. She dominated from the off and her opponent bowed out after the first round, sending Nerys into the final.

With no rest before the final, Nerys fought her heart out and at the last bell, she was crowned European Champion for the second time, making her a double European Champion.

Nerys’ proud father Ken Molloy said: “She never put a foot wrong, and all the training she did with 7- time world champion, ‘The one’ Babs, really paid off. I could not be more proud of them both.

“It was a pleasure to travel with all of them and the real winner was the experience gained by each and every member from Team Fight Club.”

Fight Club members returned back to Dublin with three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
