Reds to take on Devils at Tolka Park

The match will be played at Tolka Park on June 17.

TO celebrate Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017 and both teams’ dedication to their core values of respect and diversity, a Shelbourne XI will play the Dublin Devils at 2pm tomorrow (June 17) at Tolka Park, Richmond Road.

The Shelbourne team will include club legends such as Stuart Byrne, Gary Howlett, Tony Sheridan, Mark Rutherford and Kevin Doherty.

Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017 runs from June 16-24 and Shelbourne FC will fly the rainbow flag at Tolka Park for the duration of the festival.
Speaking about the event, Devils chairperson John McAree said: “We’re delighted to visit one of Ireland's most famous and successful football clubs. They are one of the giants of the Irish game.

“As Ireland’s first gay football team we’re proud and excited to play against this Shelbourne FC XI team. It’s a great start to our celebration of Dublin Pride 2017 and a brilliant step for both teams as we strive to stamp out homophobia in football.”

Speaking about the groundbreaking fixture, John McGouran of Shelbourne FC, said: “The 'Shels in the Community' initiative embraces the wonderful diversity that exists within our local community, and we are delighted to welcome Dublin Devils FC to Tolka Park to celebrate the Dublin LGBTQ Pride 2017.

“Dublin Devils have made tremendous strides in combating homophobia in football, a cause that is fully supported by all connected with Shelbourne FC, and we are very much looking forward to the match on June 17.”
