LAST week we highlighted some great destinations to relax and unwind during Twixmas, you know, those days between Christmas and the New Year.

Here a few more places where you can keep the holiday feeling alive while recharging the batteries for the first days of 2018.

Carlow

Hygge away this Twixmas at the Step House hotel with their cosy winter package that is sure to give you all the feels!

Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word that can be described as a quality of cosiness and comfortable warmth and hospitality that generates feelings of contentment or wellbeing, all of which you are sure to get in buckets from this gorgeous break at The Step House Hotel.

There is no better way to spend quality down time than in the luxurious surroundings of the award-winning Step House Hotel.

Relax by the open log fires and enjoy the cosy, laid back atmosphere of this family-run boutique hotel.

Included in their Winter Hygge break is a two night stay, lazy mornings with breakfast in bed, a cosy and delicious dinner by Chef Alan Foley and his team in the 1808 bar, and a Hot Toddy by the fire, from €139 per person sharing.

On the Main Street in Borris in County Carlow, bringing together a lovely old Georgian house, a pub which has been in the family for five generations, and some chic contemporary additions to create a comfortable, elegant boutique hotel full of character, The Step House also has the secret weapon of an amazingly talented chef, Alan Foley, who creates gorgeous food, deeply connected to the local area.

Familiarise yourself with the luxurious hotel surroundings, snuggle up with a book by the fire and indulge in a couple of laidback, cosy days at the hotel. In Denmark hygge is a way of life, and you’re going to love this way of life at The Step House Hotel.

Located on the main street of the picturesque town of Borris with the river Barrow and Mount Leinster in view, you can explore the area with a gentle stroll or equally you can enjoy the views while cosily snuggled up in the hotel with a hot drink.

The ‘Hygge away’ package costs €139 per person sharing which includes two-nights bed and breakfast with dinner on 1 night and a Hot Toddy by the fire. See www.stephousehotel.ie.

Ballynahinch

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel, the cosy and stylish Victorian country house and estate on its own stretch of river in the heart of Connemara, is a destination full of authentic character, luxury and history, and a gorgeous setting for a mid-Christmas break celebrating the simple pleasures of good food, good company and tradition.

Beautifully decorated for the festive season, Ballynahinch creates times to treasure with exceptional attention to detail.

You might choose to make the most of the day and get a little exercise and fresh Connemara air, with enthusiastic and professional Ballynahinch guides on hand to lead you on an incredible hike from the front door of the hotel, or you can just explore the many trails and walks of the 700 acres of the mature wooded grounds and walks at Ballynahinch at your own pace.

Or you could select one of the many bright corners, comfy couches and cosy nooks by the fire with a good book and enjoy the luxurious Irish country house Christmas atmosphere in the seasonal spirit of indulgence.

A one-night bed and breakfast getaway at Ballynahinch from December 27-30 inclusive with dinner in the handsome and atmospheric Owenmore Restaurant, the elegant series of rooms overlooking the river, is available from €365 per couple based on a classic non river view room. See www.ballynahinch-castle.com.

Athlone

Looking for a unique getaway this Twixmas or a Christmas gift for someone who loves to laugh?

Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone, on the shores of the River Shannon will embrace its inner Craggy Island with an evening of fun and festive entertainment as The Father Ted Experience arrives at the newly refurbished hotel on Wednesday, December 27.

Featuring comedians from the original show such as Joe Rooney who played Father Damo and Patrick McDonnell who played Eoin McLove, the audience can expect ‘spirited’ laughs from the start.

Then dance the night away with live band ‘The Afters’ whose hits including ‘My Lovely Horse’ and ‘Ghost Town’ featured on the show throughout the years.

Come as your favourite character and expect an evening of laughs and festive fun with spot prizes and plenty of surprises on the night!

Mount Juliet Estate

After all the presents are opened and the turkey is a distant memory, continue the festivities at Mount Juliet Estate, with special rates from December 27-30 in the elegant new Hunter’s Yard, just five minutes’ walk from the Manor House.

In a bygone era when Mount Juliet Estate was a working farm of several thousand acres, a great many people were employed and housed on the estate.

Back then, Hunter’s Yard would have had horses and haylofts, as well as lodgings for the grooms, coachmen and stable boys.

Today, this elegant courtyard is home to the bright and spacious rooms of Hunter’s Yard, a tranquil hideaway adjacent to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Signature golf course and only a few paces from the treatment rooms and the tempting menus of the Hound Restaurant at Hunter's Yard, which offers all-day dining. Welcoming, informal and good value.

The Hound at Hunter’s Yard has fabulous views of Mount Juliet Estate, and has been specially designed as a more casual, laid-back luxury option to that available in the main Manor House.

A one night stay over Twixmas at Hunter’s Yard at Mount Juliet Estate, including a full Irish breakfast, a three-course dinner in The Hound, a welcome cocktail on arrival in The Saddle Bar, late checkout of 1pm is available for €279, based on two people sharing.
