A SOUTH Dublin schoolboy football club held a very successful tournament as part of the recent Festival of World Cultures programme in Dun Laoghaire.St Joseph’s Boys’ Football Club, based in Sallynoggin, hosted the Hibernian Trophy, which attracted teams from England, Japan, Holland and Sweden. Charlton Athletic emerged victorious at the end of the eight-team competition with a 4-1 victory in the final against the Dublin and District Schoolboys’ League (DDSL). Charlton took the lead after four minutes but the DDSL equalised when Hardi Shampi got a vital touch to a Jamie Smith free kick. Disaster struck for the Dubs within minutes of the restart when a very unlucky Paul Gannon headed past his own goalkeeper. This gave the English side a boost and they played some excellent football. However, the DDSL held firm and as time kicked on they went for broke by going to three at the back. The plan backfired as Charlton took advantage of the extra space and scored a killer third goal with 10 minutes to go. Jamie McGlynn almost pulled one back for the DDSL with a tremendous shot that was tipped over by the keeper before the Londoners wrapped up victory with an excellent strike from their left winger. Chairman of the DDSL, Tommy Heffernan, said: “St Joseph’s are to be congratulated for their excellent organisation of the tournament. “They left no stone unturned in their preparation and the standard of football witnessed was of the highest calibre.” Ireland underage manager, Vincent Butler, was full of praise for the quality of teams in the tournament, which gave local players the chance to experience the levels they need to aspire to in order to compete at the top. Niall O’Driscoll, secretary of St Joseph’s Boys, was delighted with the success of the tournament. “To see many top players compete with our players and allowing the cultural exchanges operate through football is, indeed, the platform we need to create in our society moving forward,” said Mr O’Driscoll. “Add to that the very best players from Ireland and abroad and every one wins.” St Joseph’s competed well in distinguished company, winning two of their four games against Swedish premier club Trelleborg and the Japanese selection side from Izumo. A number of the hosts’ players impressed throughout, with notable performances from Ger Pender, Mark Lyons, Drew Armstrong and Craig Palmer to mention a few. Final results: Final: Charlton Athletic 4, DDSL 1; 3rd/4th Place: Utrecht FC 0 FAI Development Squad 0 (Utrecht won 5-4 on pens); 5th/6th Place: Sunderland FC 3, Izumo City 2; 7th/8th Place: St Joseph’s 3, Trelleborg FC 0. |
