Docklands kids learn from heroes

YOUNGSTERS from the Docklands area had the perfect tonic before going back to school when they took part in a festival of hurling and Gaelic football.
An elite team of sport stars that included Niall Quinn, Nicky English, Dessie Dolan, Eoin Kelly and Paul Casey shared their expert knowledge with the children during the Docklands Festival of Hurling and Gaelic Football in Donnycarney.
Open to young players, aged between nine and 15, the three-day event has been designed to help them develop their football and hurling skills and become more confident and accomplished players.
Now in its sixth year, the festival is part of the Docklands Authority’s Social Regeneration strategy and its commitment to promoting and supporting education and social development in the Docklands area.
Gerry Kelly, director of Social Regeneration for the Docklands Authority, believes the festival has significant benefits for the children.
“Since we started the event in 2003, over 350 young people have participated with great enthusiasm and success,” said Mr Kelly.
“We have been fortunate to secure the continuing involvement of high calibre sports experts who are committed to coaching and sharing their expertise. “The festival is a great opportunity for the participants to learn new skills, make new friends and nurture future sporting careers.”
