New plea from missing Bernie’s family PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 September 2008
A HEARTBROKEN Northside family has renewed its appeal for information on the anniversary of their sister’s disappearance.
Finglas local Bernie Gavan (59) went missing from Daneswood House, Ballymun Road on Sunday, August 19, 2007.
Bernie, who was a resident at Daneswood, suffered from severe bi-polar depression and was last seen in Broombridge.
Heartbroken sister Ann O’Hanlon told Northside People that the family would never give up hope for Bernie’s safe return.
“We recently walked the area where she was last seen,” Ann said.
“It was terribly sad and I think the events of the last year really hit home then. All we could do was talk about what a lovely person and sister she was.”
According to Ann, her younger sister was more often than not a very jolly and loving person to be around.
“But I guess Bernie had her good times and bad,” she said.
“Many of the people she was very close to died. She was someone who had walked a tough road.”
Bernie, was due to turn 60 this year.
“She is always in our thoughts,” Ann explained.
“We have to hold on to the hope that we will see her again. Without hope, we would have nothing.”
Ann recalled her last meeting with Bernie two weeks before she disappeared.
“We went for a cup of tea in a pub around the corner from Daneswood. Bernie loved her tea but as we were leaving she said she couldn’t walk back to Daneswood because her legs were sore so we had to get a taxi for what would have been a five minute walk,” she recalled.
“She couldn’t manage that short walk which is why I can’t understand how she managed to disappear.”
Three people are believed to have seen Bernie in Broombridge on the evening of August 19. No further sightings were reported.
“She disappeared without a trace. I would give anything to see her again,” Ann told Northside People.
“Although I’d probably smother her with love and kill her at the same time. I’d ask her ‘Where have you been?’ and she is the type of person that would laugh and say ‘Oh I was just down the road.’”
Bernie is described as being five foot tall with blond hair and glasses.
She was last seen wearing a pink jacket, pink top, pink shoes and black pants.
