A YOUNG Northside singer has proved her talent by making it through to the bootcamp stage of the hit UK talent show X Factor.
Melanie McCabe (15), from Whitehall, managed to last over a week in the important second stage of the competition, successfully taking on talented rivals with years more experience.
After passing the first round of auditions in June, Melanie, accompanied by her mum, went to London to showcase her talent.
“I was really surprised and happy about how well I did in the show,” Melanie told Northside People.
“I got the furthest out of any of the Irish girls and was there for about a week and a half altogether.
“I am 15 now but I was 14 when I auditioned and was the youngest out of the Irish group so I think I did very well.
“I was nervous about being on television but I have been singing since I was three-years-of-age so I am used to performing at this stage.”
Melanie’s friends were delighted with her success on the show. She was constantly barraged with phone calls and text messages from those looking to find out how she was progressing.
Over 200,000 people auditioned and just 50 went through to the bootcamp stage where they are cut down to a select group of finalists competing for the prize of a £1 million recording contract.
The bootcamp involved a lot of performing on stage.
“I had voice training as well,” stated Melanie.
“The whole thing was filmed for the show so it was a bit nerve-wracking.
“I got to meet famous people like Dermot O’Leary and my episode is going to be on TV in the next few weeks; I’m not allowed give away all the details obviously.”
Melanie is currently attending Dominican College, Drumcondra, but hopes to pursue a career in music when she is finished.
“Singing is all I have ever wanted to do,” she added.
“It’s really all that I think about doing. I don’t want to just do X Factor, although I will try out again next year. I want to have my own career in singing.
“I already do regular gigs on Sundays in Kinsealy. I love singing soul music like Whitney Houston but I also do a lot of modern stuff.
“I’m going to keep training my voice and doing what I can to improve my performance.”
Melanie’s mother, Clare, said she is fully behind her daughter’s plans to pursue a career as a singer, so long as she finishes school first.
“All she has ever wanted to do since she was young is sing,’ stated Clare.
“It really is her one love. She has such a small, delicate frame but her voice is very powerful. People are shocked when they hear her.
“I know every mother would say it, but she really is a fabulous singer and we are all so proud of her achievements.”
