A NORTHSIDE community radio station will officially become the first 24-hour community radio station broadcasting in Ireland this week.
NEAR90FM based in Coolock will be launching its brand new round the clock schedule this Thursday live on air from 5pm.
Due to the station’s increasing popularity and success, its management decided that it was time to branch out and expand their programming by adding more hours to its already packed schedule.
Now listeners will be able to tune in before 8am and after midnight to keep up to date with their favourite local shows while commuting in the early morning or working a late shift.
Co-op manager at NEAR90fm, Ciaran Murray, told Northside People that the extra broadcast time the station is receiving provides a great opportunity for anyone with an idea for a new show to get in touch.
“We are always looking for new ideas here at the station and love to hear from people about what should be on or what they would like to do,” he said.
“There is lots of room now for people to come in with ideas and we love to hear from people who are fanatical about a subject.
“It could be languages, sports, music or politics, anything you are into – we have a lot of people putting in lots of hard work to make great shows they are passionate about.”
As a local station, NEAR90fm clearly punches above its weight, drawing in a respectable 20,000 listeners across the Northside.
Ciaran believes there is a huge audience for local news as well as specialist topics that may not be covered by larger stations.
“I think one of the best things is that we can provide a space for marginalised voices within society whether that’s through our work with immigrant communities or campaigning groups who don’t have access to mainstream media,” he stated.
“We have programmes for the French, Polish, Chinese and African communities and we also cover local sports including soccer and cricket.
“We cover Shelbourne FC games live, as well as some of the Dublin soccer club games that would be of interest to people in the area.
“There are specialist programmes for fans of ska, reggae, jazz, opera, classical, trad and all sorts of dance.”
A half and half mixture of music and talk is maintained by the station’s volunteers to ensure a balanced output.
The station previously shut down at midnight and started again at 8am, something that Ciaran feels was very old fashioned.
“We won’t be doing late night talk shows or drivetime programmes but I think a lot of people will still tune in to get something different,” he added.
“We wouldn’t turn anyone away with a good idea though and we are always taking on new volunteers.”
You can contact the station on 8671190 or through the website, www.nearfm.ie
Fans of Northside Today, Ska Patrol, NEAR90 Sessions, Club Cheol, Picking the Blues and many other music programmes can listen all through the night on NEAR90fm or by logging onto the NEAR90fm website.
