DARNDALE’S smokers have been set a challenge.
‘Smoke Free Homes’, which was launched last month, aims to protect children and all family members from the harmful effects of second hand smoke.
As part of the launch, a competition will feature three levels of participation, and will last for four weeks, with those who successfully participate, eligible for prizes worth e500, e150 and e50.
The launch was hosted at the Darndale Village Centre, and provided an educational and fun day for all the family.
Local face painters and colouring competitions kept children amused while NEAR FM carried a live broadcast of the event.
Dublin GAA player David Henry showed great creativity with local youths and spent hours promoting simple fitness activities like skipping and teaching more advanced football skills.
Dublin Fire Service was a great draw too with two fire officers from Kilbarrack responding to the younger children’s fascination with a fire engine, while another officer manned a stand promoting fire safety in the home and raising awareness about the link between smoking in the home and house fires.
Community gardai from Coolock Garda Station took the opportunity to mingle with the crowd as did local GP Dr Barry Teeling.
Miriam Gunning, a senior health promotion officer for tobacco with the Health Services Executive (HSE), welcomed the event, which provided people with an opportunity to think about their smoking habits.
“The success of this event can be attributed to the hard work and commitment of all partners in an eventful first year of a partnership that was set up to address the smoking behaviour of residents in the Darndale area,” said Ms Gunning.
On the day HSE staff were busy recording Carbon Monoxide levels of smokers, encouraging them to think about quitting and promoting the Quit Smoking support service.
If you or a family member is thinking about quitting smoking, call Eva on 085-8478960 or Bernie on 085-8478961 from the Stop Smoking Service in Darndale.
