| Honda joins forces with tree programme |

To celebrate the introduction of the new environmental vehicle registration tax programme Universal Honda has teamed up with Native Woodland Trust to ‘plant a tree’ on behalf of all purchasers of the CO2 friendly Civic IMA Hybrid registered from July 1 last. All the Honda trees will be planted in Farnaght Wood on the borders of Counties Leitrim and Longford representing the borders of Connaught and Leinster. Farnaght Wood was recently purchased outright by Native Woodland Trust and the planted trees will be managed and sustained into the long-term future by the Trust. Certificates will be issued to each customer to acknowledge the tree planting on their behalf. Native Woodland Trust is an Irish registered charity run by volunteers. Its aim is to foster the creation of new woodland throughout Ireland and to preserve all species and identifiable genotype of Ireland’s native trees. At the launch of the Honda promotion, environmentalist Duncan Stewart welcomed such a positive initiative from Honda. “Honda and Native Woodland Trust are good partners and the project is in keeping with the ethos of many potential hybrid owners, who typically care more for the environment and who wish to drive more sustainably by minimising their CO2 emissions,” he said. “The environmental benefits of planting woodland of native broadleaf trees include fostering and managing the indigenous woodland ecosystem with its unique biodiversity while providing a natural habitat for Irish wildlife.” Frank Kennedy, sales and marketing director of Universal Honda, added: “Developing environmental products has always been at the core of Honda’s advancing technology. For this reason we are happy to join forces with Native Woodland Trust to assist the promotion and advancement of their good work. All the ‘Honda’ trees will be planted out in a random pattern without rows, in keeping with natural woodland; all carried out to best practice techniques of sustainably managed forestry.” The managing director of Native Woodland Trust, Jim Lawlor added: “As the woodland has been purchased outright by the Trust, this woodland will be there ad infinitum. The seven-acre site will be planted with a combination of Oak, Ash, Elm, Cherry, Hazel, Birch, Willow and Rowan. “It will also include shrubs such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Broom and Guelder Rose. A small portion of the site will be kept as a flower meadow as species such as Yellow Rattle and Early Purple Orchid are already present. This partnership with Universal Honda allows us to move forward with our goal of completing this woodland.” |
