Thousands expected at new health rally PDF Print E-mail

THE Northside based spokesperson for lobby group, Patients Together, is preparing to lead thousands of protesters through the streets of Dublin in a second major rally to highlight “the failings” of Ireland’s health care system.
Glasnevin local Janette Byrne is urging people from all over the country to “stand up and be counted” on October 11.
“This protest is about taking back control of our country’s healthcare system,” she told Northside People.
“We are not just going to stand by idly while spending cuts are introduced and patients are the ones who are suffering from indignity.
“We want as many people on the street shouting with one voice: ‘Hands off our Health’.
“Everybody’s been affected by the failings of our health care system which is why we want as many people as possible to come out in support of one cause.”
According to Janette, a previous demonstration organised by Patients Together earlier this year was a huge success.
“We were blown away by the response,” she said. “We couldn’t believe that people felt strongly enough to travel from Donegal, Cork and Galway to protest.
“Around 8,100 turned out for the last march so we expect over 10,000 people at the next one which will take place in Merrion Square.
“There are thousands of sick people who are really eager to protest but they are too ill, so we need those who are fit and healthy to be their voice.”
She added: “Many people read terrible stories about hospitals and our health care system. They are sympathetic but the time has now come for action.”
There is a long list of concerns and issues that need to be raised, Janette explained.
“Hospitals still have a chronic shortage of beds,” she said.
“Patients are still putting up with unhygienic conditions, MRSA, CDiff and other acquired infections which is completely unacceptable given the wealth of the country.
“Hundreds of people have also had appointments which they have waited months for cancelled at short notice, meaning they have to wait several more months to be seen by consultants.”
