Patrick Hanley (29) was a member of the four-man Irish national racquetball team that took on professional sides from around the world in this prestigious event.
The Irish demonstrated fantastic skill and sheer determination to finish ninth place overall in the competition.
In the first round they beat the Dominican Republic to progress to the second division final where they faced the Netherlands, beating them 2 -1.
However, the might of the USA team proved too much for Ireland’s men’s team who were eventually knocked out following a 3-0 defeat.
Patrick Hanley is an exceptional racquetball player boasting experience at international level in both junior and senior championships.
Liam Hughes (Arklow), Adam Neary (Fermoy) and Noel O’Callaghan (Fermoy) made up the four-man team.
Meanwhile, the Irish women’s team also put in a strong performance at the event.
This was Ireland’s first year to host the championships, which attracted 200 top racquetball players from 28 countries.
Eric Meyers, President of the European Racquetball Federation, said: “We were delighted to receive a bid from Ireland to host the 2008 World Championship.
“The event was a unique opportunity to see world class racquetball being played at its very best.”
