support.jpgTHE Tour of Ireland will start at Grand Canal Square on August 27.
Dubliners are being urged to show their support for one of the top Irish teams taking part – the An Post sponsored Sean Kelly team.
The An Post boys in green enjoyed huge home support for the FBD Rás back in May, which was won by team member Stephen Gallagher.
They are hoping that another great show of support from the home crowd will help give them the edge in the very tough field.
An Post has launched a ‘Be Seen Go Green’ initiative to show its support for the team and the race.
Locals are being encouraged to support the team at the start line and along the route – by wearing green, having their faces painted green or using any imaginative way of showing their green colours and backing.
The Go Green team will be on hand at each sprint line with lots of prizes to give out to people who are decked out in green.
According to Stepaside Postmaster, Desmond Kennedy, the An Post team received huge support when the Rás passed through towns around Ireland back in May.
“We thought it would be nice this time to reward that great support, so we launched ‘Be Seen Go Green’,” he said.
“And we are hoping that Dublin has the best show of green at the start of the race.”
This Wednesday, 112 riders will head out on a route across 12 counties towards the final destination – Cork city.
The 900km race has been awarded a 2.1 ranking on the UCI (the world governing body for cycling) calendar and will attract some of the best professional teams from Europe, USA, Australia and South Africa.
The route embraces key towns and cities, as well as iconic mountain passes and splendid Irish scenery.
The An Post Seán Kelly team for the 2008 Tour of Ireland, in association with Fáilte Ireland, comprises Paidi O’Brien, Stephen Gallagher, Mark Cassidy, Daniel Lloyd, Daniel Fleeman, Kenny Lisabeth and Benny De Schrooder.
