Mulvey pipped in 10-mile thriller

KENYAN Josphat Boit pipped North Dubliner Vinnie Mulvey to win the Lifestyle Sports-adidas Frank Duffy 10-Mile race in the Phoenix Park on August 16.
The Arkansas based athlete and training partner of Alistair Craig, was competing in his first ever 10-mile race and his longest competitive outing to date.
Josphat said he was happy with his victory.
“They weren’t great running conditions out there,” he said.
“It was quite windy; it was in our faces for at least half the course, so yes, I was pretty happy with the time I got.
“That’s the longest distance I’ve ran competitively, so I did find it a bit challenging; 5k is definitely my preferred race.”
There was a nail-biting sprint to the line between Boit and Raheny Shamrock AC man Mulvey, winner of the five-mile in the park last month, with only four seconds between the two in the end.
Mulvey, who also finished second to Boit in the previous weekend’s Streets of Galway race, was disappointed not to make it two wins in a row.
“We were together all the way along the course, pretty much to I guess the last half mile and he pulled away a little,” said Vinny.
“It was tough out there; the wind was very strong, and it was quite humid as well, so it wasn’t ideal conditions at all.
“I’m disappointed right now. There wasn’t much in it at the end, he just had better legs than me down the final stretch.”
Former Irish Olympian and Dublin native, Maria McCambridge, won the women’s race in a time of 58.16.
McCambridge competed in the 5k in Athens, and is set to tackle her first marathon this October. Her partner Gary Crossan, one of Ireland’s leading marathon runners, finished fifth overall in the men’s race.
There was no shortage of Dublin runners with a record 3,600 people taking part despite the threatening weather conditions.
The 10-mile is the second of three races in the challenge series.
The half marathon takes place next month and is the final race in the series ahead of the Lifestyle Sports-adidas Dublin Marathon in October.
Among the Dublin runners were Jonathan Power and Mark Willoughby who looked in fine form as they warmed up ahead of the race on Saturday morning, and veteran marathon runner Jim McNamara seemed as if he still had bags of energy left as he celebrated coming second in the over 65s category.

Women’s top three: Maria McCambridge, DSD, 58:16; Rosemary Ryan, Bilboa AC, 59:29; Breege Connolly, North Belfast Harriers, 59:41.
