NRA confident that M50 toll tag system will work

THE National Roads Authority (NRA) expects that over 70,000 people will have signed up for tags for the new barrier free tolling on the M50 by the end of month.
Despite reports of confusion over the numerous tags and toll rates available, the NRA claims its e1 million advertising campaign has proven worthwhile as “people are no longer in the dark about the new system”.
From August 30 the West Link toll booths will be replaced with an over-head gantry containing cameras and detectors which will register the number plates of all vehicles passing beneath.
The system is designed with efficiency in mind as drivers will no longer have to slow down or scramble for change, a problem that has led to serious delays and bottlenecks in the past.
Instead drivers can continue unobstructed through the M50 at the legal speed limit.
A spokesperson for the NRA claims the system has been well received among the public.
“The general consensus is that most people understand how the new system will work,” Sheila Flanagan told Northside People.

“We are in line to meet our target of 70,000 purchased toll tags by the end of the month.
“We hope that come August 30, the new system will come into place without any major hiccups. This type of system is working successfully in other countries so we expect the same here.”
Ms Flanagan clarified how rental cars and foreign registered vehicles will not escape the toll charge.
“We are working closely with rental companies to find the best way to get the charges from those who have used the M50,” she explained.
“We have access to the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority in Northern Ireland and we have carried out an extensive advertising campaign in foreign countries so that tourists are aware of the new system and know how to pay the toll.
“We also have an enforcement company employed to track down foreign motorists who have not paid the fee.”
