TWO children and an adult had a lucky escape over the bank holiday weekend when their jet ski capsized and threw them into freezing waters close to Howth Harbour.
They were thrown into the sea after their jet ski overturned in Howth Sound at approximately 4.30pm on Monday, August 4.
A yacht that happened to be nearby witnessed their plight and quickly picked up the children from the water.
The yacht then made radio contact with Dublin Coast Guard who alerted Howth Coast Guard’s patrol boat, ‘Grainne’, which was in the area at the back of Ireland’s Eye at the time.
The ‘Grainne’ was on the scene within 30 seconds and quickly went to the assistance of an adult male who was in the water and with the jet ski.
Colin Murray, Howth Coast Guard Area Officer, told Northside People: “The adult was still in the water and needed assistance. We went to help and got him on board the ‘Grainne’.
“The two kids on the yacht were cold and a bit shook up but they didn’t need medical attention. “They were lucky to have been discovered so quickly, as they only had light summer clothes on.”
A towline was attached from the ‘Grainne’ to the jet ski and the patrol boat then proceeded to the beach on Ireland’s Eye and picked up three further children who belonged to the same party that were on the jet ski.
The entire group was then brought safely back to Howth Harbour.
Officer Murray pointed out that the children and adult were lucky that day.
“Lifejackets were worn by all three and this undoubtedly gave them time in order for the yacht and the ‘Grainne’ to reach the scene and effect a rescue,” he added.
