WHEN Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni attended the FAI’s AGM in Mayo recently, he raised his eyes after learning that three of his current senior squad started out on their football careers at St Joseph’s Boys’ Football Club.Joey’s, the famous nursery club from Sallynoggin, had just received the Club of the Year Award for 2008. The players in question are Andy Keogh, Paul McShane and Alan O’Brien. At the AGM, Joey’s pipped a number of top clubs from all over the country to the prestigious award. The independent judging panel that included Arnold O’Byrne assessed Joey’s in a number of areas including facilities, participation and coaching. The club, which boasts almost 1,000 children and includes six girls’ teams, was founded in 1953 and is exclusively run by over 120 volunteers. FAI President, David Blood, acknowledged the huge contribution Joey’s has made to grassroots football and its impact in the soccer community. In his acceptance speech on behalf of the club, George Forsyth, chairman of St Joseph’s Boys’ FC, thanked the judging panel. Mr Forsyth said it was a privilege to accept the award on behalf of all the leaders, coaches and players at St Joseph’s. “To carry on the ethos of ‘putting the player first’ as laid down by our founders, shows that the development of children in the right environment, with the right values is, indeed, the way forward, which ultimately benefits society in the long term,” stated Mr Forsyth. George dedicated the award to the late Austin Mullen, who passed away this season after a lifetime commitment to Joey’s. Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Boys’ FC are now looking forward to hosting the Hibernia Trophy that takes place from August 22-24. Charlton, Sunderland, Utrecht, Trelleborg and Izumo City are among the teams competing. Full details are available on www.hiberniatrophy.com |
