Mixed results for Southside hospitals in new survey

A Southside hospital was voted by patients to have one of the greatest shortages of staff in the country, according to the most recent website survey.
Of the 45 hospitals in which patients were surveyed, the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, was ranked third last in the country with only 54 per cent of those surveyed expressing their satisfaction with the level of staff at the facility.
Of the acute hospitals on the Southside, St Columcille’s in Loughlinstown was the worst performing facility and was ranked eighth last in the country with only 56 per cent of those surveyed happy with the level of staff there.
However, two other hospitals in South Dublin fared particularly well in the latest survey with Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin ranking fourth best in the country with 74 per cent of patients expressing satisfaction with staffing levels.
Meanwhile, St Michael’s Hospital in Dún Laoghaire was ranked in eighth place overall with 71 per cent of those happy with staff levels.
Tallaght Hospital was ranked at number 18 with 65 per cent happy with staffing levels while St Vincent’s Hospital was ranked in 23rd place nationally with 62 per cent of patients saying they were happy with staff levels.
The findings come at a time when increasing concern is being expressed about the impact on health services of recent HSE and Government savings measures.
With Rate My Hospital, patients and their relatives who have recently had a hospital experience are asked to judge the facilities and services from one to five under a number of different headings.
One of the questions is: ‘Do you feel there was adequate staff available to look after patient needs?’
Overall, patients and their relatives gave hospitals around the country an average score of only 3.18 out of five in terms of having enough staff to look after patient needs properly.
Management at Loughlinstown Hospital declined to comment on the latest survey results. Holles Street Hospital had no one available for comment.
A spokeswoman for the HSE said: “The HSE is aware of the ‘Rate My Hospital’ addition to irishhealth.com. Health is a complex area and we always seek to provide an excellence of care to all our patients.
“While we welcome all comments from the public on our hospitals, we would stress that the views expressed on the site are anonymous and without verification or validation.”
She added: “We have individual complaints procedures at our hospitals and would always encourage any person who wishes to raise any issue to do so at this level.”
