Sports clubs in the money

A NUMBER of sports clubs and organisations across Dublin had reasons to be cheerful last week when the Government announced that 682 projects nationwide are to receive grants totalling e50 million.
Of that total, e13.8 million will go to sports clubs/organisations in the capital.
The biggest winners were Tallaght Stadium (e2.75 million) and Rathmines Sports and Leisure Centre (e1 million), while the Athletic Association of Ireland, Basketball Ireland and the Centre of Excellence on Alfie Byrne Road each netted e500,000.
On the Northside, Morton Stadium in Santry received e400,000, with St Paul's Artane Football Club (e300,000), Naomh Barrog GAA Club, Kilbarrack (e155,000), and the Oscar Traynor Coaching and Development Centre Ltd (e150,000) also benefiting from the Sports Capital Programme’s latest splurge.
In north county Dublin, there was good news for Skerries Community Centre (e80,000), St Sylvester’s GAA Club, Malahide (e100,000), and Glebe North Football Club, Balbriggan (e140,000), while also on the Northside, McKelvey Celtic AFC, Finglas (e350,000), Castleknock Hurling & Football Club (e250,000), DCC - Kildonan Road (e250,000), Community/Mixed, Blakestown Mountview Sports (e95,000), Community/Mixed and Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club (e65,000) were among the beneficiaries.
More of the big Southside recipients included DCC Le Fanu Ballyfermot Sports and Leisure Centre (e250,000), SDCC Clondalkin Park - Skate Park (e100,000), Ballyboden St Enda’s Sancta Maria (e350,000), De La Salle Palmerstown Football Club (e200,000) and St Anne’s GAA Club, Bohernabreena (e300,000).
The programme, which is part-funded by the National Lottery and administered by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, is the primary vehicle for Government support for the provision of sports facilities and equipment around the country.
Minister for Sport, Martin Cullen, said the allocations build upon the “excellent” work of previous rounds of the programme and continue to support dedicated community spirit and reward local volunteerism.
“Every pitch that is laid, every changing room that is built and every piece of sport equipment bought, will allow more people to take part in a huge range of sports and help them to achieve their full potential in their chosen sport," Minister Cullen stated.
“At local level, for example, these allocations will allow 17 boxing clubs to buy new sports equipment and improve their gyms.
“These allocations will also help in the provision of pitches, the building and fitting out of dressing rooms and clubhouses, and the installation of floodlighting for soccer, hockey, rugby and GAA clubs across the country.”
Public representatives across all parties welcomed the funding for the various clubs in their areas, but there were others who expressed disappointment on behalf of the clubs who missed out in this latest round of funding.
