Concerns raised over swimming pool masts

A NORTHSIDE man has raised concerns over the amount of masts on the roof of a Dublin City Council-owned swimming pool.
Patrick Fleming, from Coolock, claimed that the huge steel framed roof on the swimming pool at Northside Shopping Centre serves as a large mast for over 50 broadcasting masts, as well as a number of huts containing base stations.
Mr Fleming claimed they are a potential hazard for pool users.
“I use a mobile phone myself and I’m not opposed to masts,” Mr Fleming told Northside People.
“I just worry about the high concentration of the masts; they should be more spread out.
“I think that this could be a terrible health hazard and that parents should be warned of the potential dangers.”
Mr Fleming, who has a background in electronics, believes that plans to build a new, taller shopping centre at Northside could “reduce” the potential health risk from the masts.
“As it is, I think they represent a clear and present danger to the people of Coolock,” he claimed.
“According to Government commissioned reports that I have read, you shouldn’t pass within two metres of these things.

“But at the swimming pool all they have is the ceiling and roof to protect them. I wonder how safe that is for kids.”
The person dealing with the issue at Dublin City Council was unavailable for comment when contacted by Northside People.
According to the Department of the Environment’s website: “There is no established scientific basis or evidence of adverse health effects affecting children or adults, as a result of their exposure to mobile phone base stations.
“This applies irrespective of the location of the phone mast.”
Dublin North East TD Terence Flanagan (FG) said he was “shocked” to discover the large amount of masts on top of the swimming pool.
“The number of masts seems to have grown down through the years and I have major concerns,” he stated.
“I’m calling on Dublin City Council to investigate the number of masts on the swimming pool roof and provide a report.”
