THE north inner city ward will have a new Independent councillor in September. Maureen O’Sullivan, from East Wall, will replace Michael Rafferty who has announced his resignation from Dublin City Council. Ms O’Sullivan will work closely with local Independent TD, Tony Gregory, to provide a strong voice for the community in the Dáil and City Hall. Mr Rafferty, one of a large number of councillors who have resigned from their council seats since the last local elections in 2004, felt his council work had become a full-time job and was conflicting with his own work. “I feel that I can no longer put in the necessary work on the ground over the next year to ensure that we can retain the independent community seat,” Cllr Rafferty said. “I have concentrated on working with community groups so they could participate in social change for their benefit. “From the beginning of my campaign four years ago, I said I would highlight issues of equality and rights as the keys to promoting justice at a local level in Dublin’s inner city.” Cllr Rafferty has also taken a keen interest in Traveller issues and the need for the development of clear, unambiguous anti-racist policies. “On all these issues I have tried to maintain a participative community development approach as opposed to a clientalist one,” he added. “From August, I am resigning as the independent councillor for the north inner city constituency. “The good news is that having consulted with my supporters, a strong candidate has emerged to take my place and in September, Maureen O’ Sullivan will be the Independent councillor for the Dublin North Inner City ward. “I wish to thank my friends, family and supporters for all their advice and assistance over the years. |
