melbourne.jpgIN AUGUST, Ireland’s national Australian Rules Football team, Ireland Warriors, will travel to Melbourne to compete in the AFL International Cup 2008.
The squad has been training hard and making preparations for the last year in order to have a serious tilt at the cup they won in the inaugural year of the tri-annual event in 2002.
On July 19, the team gathered in North Dublin to play a trial match against members of a combined team from the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland.
Sixteen teams from across the world will compete in the competition including USA, Great Britain, India, South Africa, Japan, China and the combined Israeli-Palestinian Peace Team.
Ireland play their first Pool D match against Sweden on August 27, Finland on the 29th and meet Canada on September 1 to complete the pool stages.
The series of knockout finals continues throughout the week culminating in the Grand Final on September 6 at the world renowned Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
