Parking charges spark outrage

IARNRÓD Eireann’s proposals to introduce parking charges at its stations have sparked outrage among Northside commuters.
Iarnród Éireann has confirmed to Northside People that the charges are to be introduced at the company’s car parks in the autumn.
Parking will be on a Pay and Display basis, with rates set at e2 per day and e8 per week.
Northside stations affected will include Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Lusk, Donabate, Malahide, Portmarnock, Killester and Clontarf Road.
Iarnród Éireann say they have a major programme of car park expansion with over 13,000 new spaces planned across their network, and intend to use the new revenue to fund this.
“This nominal charge will allow us to continue the development of our car park facilities,” a spokesperson for Iarnród Eireann stated.
“The experience shown in other public transport Park and Ride facilities is that payment has seen an increase in the catchment area for public transport - those who live within walking distance of stations are leaving the car at home, freeing up spaces for people from a wider area to benefit from the parking facilities.
“These are the lowest charges of any paid public transport Park and Ride facilities in the commuter area.”
The proposed charges have been slammed by a number of local public representatives who believe the move will discourage people from using public transport.
