UNEMPLOYMENT figures in Blanchardstown and Finglas have risen significantly over the past 12 months according to the latest statistics.
Over 1,000 people have signed on in Blanchardstown since last summer, the recently released figures reveal.
The Live Register now indicates that 4,651 people are now on the dole in the Dublin 15 area as opposed to 3,401 in the summer of 2007.
The numbers signing on at the Navan Road exchange are also quite startling with a recorded increase of 722 over the past year.
There are now 3,251 people signing on at the Dublin 7 office.
Figures also show a massive increase in the number of people claiming social welfare unemployment payments in Finglas.
Almost 900 more people signed on since May of 2007 to bring the total number of those registered in Finglas to 3,168.
According to local Finglas councillor, John Lyons (Lab), the figures reflect a worrying trend.
“The numbers indicate that hundreds of families in the area now are struggling to pay their mortgages and bills,” he told Northside People.
“A 39 per cent increase in unemployment levels in Finglas is unacceptable. In February alone this year, four people a day lost their jobs in the area and now the situation has worsened and still nothing is being done to address the situation.”
He added: “Meanwhile Ballymun has seen a 12 per cent increase in people signing on in the same period. The lower increase may have been off-set by the work Ballymun Regeneration is doing to revitalise the area.”
