Gaelscoil project off to flying start

HUGE numbers of parents are eager to sign their children up for a Dublin 15 Gaelscoil, plans of which are only in their infancy.
Crowds of parents packed into a recent information meeting to discuss the proposed Tyrrelstown school, which organisers believe could be up and running next year.
Local TD, Joan Burton, addressed the crowd and pledged her support for the project.
According to Claire Clifford of the founding committee working on plans to establish the Irish speaking school, the turnout at the recent meeting was “overwhelming”.
“It was absolutely brilliant to see so many people interested in the development of the school,” she told Northside People.
“There were people from all nationalities in attendance and we now have over 100 children registered for the school if it is open in September 2009.
“We also have enrolments for 2010, 2011 and 2012.”
Claire explained how badly needed the school is in the area.
“Nearly a full class of junior infants is born in the Tyrrelstown area each month,” she said.
“We now need to try to get a site for the school, recognition from the Department of Education and we also need to focus our efforts on fundraising to come up with the e20,000 needed to get the ball rolling for the school.”
At the recent meeting parents, local representatives and committee members unanimously agreed that the new school should be called Gaelscoil an Chuilinn (Holly).
Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan who also represents Dublin West has agreed to meet with representatives from the committee to discuss proposals for the gaelscoil.
Gaelscoileanna Teo, an organisation dedicated to learning through Irish, say it will work closely with the founding committee to ensure that the Tyrellstown/Hollystown Gaelscoil is opened as soon as possible.
The first fundraising activity for the school will be a golf classic at Hollystown Golf Club on Friday August 22.
Teams of four cost e300 which covers a round of golf followed by a meal. There are also various sponsorship opportunities available for local businesses. Anybody interested in helping the school is asked to contact Claire Clifford on 087-2684027 or email gaelscoilanchuilinn@gmail. com.
