Locals petition council over dangerous road

OVER 1,000 people in Ballymun have signed a petition lobbying for a badly needed pedestrian crossing on a busy road.
Northside People recently reported how a number of accidents have taken place on a local stretch of road.
Over the past four weeks, frustrated locals held two protests to highlight the situation on Balbutcher Lane, which continues on to Hollytree Terrace Road.
A petition containing 1,300 signatures has been sent to the Dublin City Manager.
The Ballymun Active Disability Interest Group (BADIG) organised the petition, which was submitted to the council last month.
“It was suggested that perhaps a petition would be a good way of making the council realise how strongly people felt about the need for a pedestrian crossing on the road,” Alex Sproule of the group explained.
“We could have got more signatures but we wanted to submit it so that we could have a controlled crossing as soon as possible.”

According to Mr Sproule, a number of people with disabilities, young and old, experience problems crossing the road.
“You have to wait for quite some time before you can get across,” he said.
“When we were collecting petitions, one woman told us that she sometimes waits up to ten minutes to cross the road on her way to work.”
He added: “Numerous accidents have occurred over the past few years involving adults and children, cars, trucks and buses.”
Clare Whelan recently told Northside People how she was knocked down while crossing the road with her guide dog.
“I’m terrified to cross the road alone ever since I was hit so now I wait until a passer-by can help me across safely,” she explained.
“It’s getting too close for comfort now. Is the council waiting for someone to get killed before it decides to do something about this?”
Motorists travelling to and from Finglas, Charlestown and Lanesborough are frequent users of the two-kilometre stretch of road.
