New Stardust independent examiner named PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
THE Stardust Victims’ Committee’s hopes of getting a new inquiry into the 1981 fire received a boost last week when the Government announced a new independent examiner for the case.
Paul Coffey SC has been appointed to conduct the examination.
Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan (Lab) congratulated the leaders of the Stardust Victims’ Committee - Antoinette Keegan, Christine Keegan and Gertrude Barrett - for their longstanding and steadfast campaign.
“I hope that Paul Coffey SC will now bring the investigation to a swift conclusion and that justice will finally be achieved for the Stardust fire victims and their relatives,” said Deputy Broughan.
The Stardust Victims’ Committee withdrew their support for the previous independent examination earlier this year when it emerged that the previously appointed examiner, John Gallagher SC, had represented gardai during the original hearings in the Coroner’s Court in 1982.
