Local community activist announces election intentions PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
A NIGERIAN national now living in Dublin 15 has announced his intention to stand in next year’s local elections.
Tyrrelstown resident, Ignatius Okafor, says he will answer the call for locals who have urged him to represent their area.
“Almost 200 people have expressed their wish to see me stand in the next election,” he told Northside People.
“Many people feel there is a gap in representation that needs to be filled.
“They want someone to act on behalf of their interests and to highlight their concerns.”
Ignatius and his wife have lived in Belgree Drive in Tyrrelstown for over four years.
The couple has a five-year-old daughter who was born here in Ireland.
Ignatius, an IT specialist with Temple Street Hospital, is active in the community and is a member of the local residents’ association and football club.
“A recent report found that the Tyrrelstown area is not sustainable in the long term and that the area suffers from a lack of public transport, community facilities and schools,” he explained.
“I will use all legitimate means possible to continue to press for attention to be given to the issues and plights of the people in the area because my children and family stand to benefit when things get better.
“Tyrrelstown is my community and the people are my people. I know the problems in the area so the people’s problems are mine also.”
Ignatius moved to Ireland initially over eight years ago and is also a Belgium citizen.
He says he has not decided on whether he will go forward as an independent candidate or if he will join a political party.
The community activist is also the executive co-ordinator of the Mutual Cultural and Literary Exchange Centre (MCLEC).
