A NORTH Dublin youngster is set to pursue his lifetime ambition of becoming a professional footballer.Tom Baldwin, captain of the Under 16 team at St Paul’s Artane, is leaving to join Stockport County, a club managed by former eircom League of Ireland player, Jim Gannon. And Baldwin couldn’t be moving to the Edgeley Park club at a better time, as they will start the new season next month in Coca Cola League 1 after winning promotion at the end of last season. The transfer came about after St Paul’s were invited to Stockport for a week’s coaching last year. The schoolboy club duly accepted the invite and the players were outstanding in terms of their attitude, ability and behaviour. Stockport officials were most impressed by the St Paul’s approach and identified some key players that they would keep an eye on. The player who shone brightest was team captain Tom Baldwin. “It’s easy to see why a club like Stockport would be impressed by such a player, who demonstrates a model attitude,” said team managers John O’Leary and John Cummins. “Tom is a manager’s dream, first up for training, last to leave, and he wants to listen and learn as much as possible.” Another ex League of Ireland great, Kevin ‘Gaff’ Brady, has coached Tom since the age of seven. “Baldwin is a fine young prospect with a great attitude and taking the step to enter professional full-time football will only help to improve him,” said a spokesperson for St Paul’s. “Another positive is that Jim Gannon is one of the most progressive young coaches in the English game and will take an active role in the development of his fellow Dubliner.” All of Tom’s teammates at St Paul’s wish their captain well in his career and thank him and his family for their services to the club. Meanwhile, in preparation for the new schoolboy season, training for the Under 17 Premier and Under 18 Major teams recommences on July 15 at 6.30pm at Lein Road. New players are welcome. |
