Athlete’s career given a boost PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 July 2008
athlete.jpgA PROMISING Dublin athlete’s career has received a boost after she was named on Athletics Ireland’s ESB Athlete Support Scheme for 2008.
Dundrum South Dublin (DSD) athlete, Linda Byrne, has had a strong year in the field.
Byrne was one of Ireland’s top performers at the European World Cross Country Championships in Spain last December. The 22-year old came through a talented field to claim a sixth place finish.
The programme will provide financial support to a group of nine talented young Irish athletes to help them fulfil their potential.
This will aid each athlete with his or her training, travel, coaching, sports science and medical support.
Mary Coghlan, chief executive of Athletics Ireland, is delighted with the impact the scheme has had on supporting Irish athletes.
“The ESB Athlete Support Scheme is a great asset to these athletes,” stated Ms Coghlan.
“This scheme has given vital support to our emerging athletes and has undoubtedly been one of the factors in the great leaps forward their performances have taken in the last couple of years.
Padraig McManus, chief executive of ESB, said he was pleased that the company is supporting the programme.
“The Athletics Support Programme is part of ESB’s continued support for youth development through sponsorship,” stated Mr McManus.
Liam Hennessy, President of Athletics Ireland, sees great value in the scheme.
“We are currently going through a glorious phase in the sport with an impressive broad based group of talent emerging from the youth and junior ranks,” he said.
