sutherland.jpgAS part of St Saviour’s Olympic Boxing Academy’s (OBA) club development in the north inner city, a coaching programme took place recently to help foster the sport at grassroots level.
The club’s juvenile coaching team ran a number of beginner programmes with groups from St Vincent's Primary School, Larkin College and Dorset Street/Hardwicke Street flat complexes to encourage young people to get into the sport of boxing as a positive life choice.
Derek Ahern, a sports development officer at Dublin City Council, said the fun and intro sessions have been great with over 130 kids getting involved.
“This will give them a positive insight into the sport as we spread the net to find the new, talented Darren Sutherlands of this world,” said Mr Ahern.
“Darren (a member of St Saviour’s OBA), who has just returned from Poland with yet another gold medal in the EU Boxing Championships, is great with the kids, and a positive role model to everybody at the club.”
On the final day of the programme, Darren presented the kids with certificates and T-shirts.
Separately, the club has provided T-shirts for those supporting Darren during the Olympics in Beijing, with ‘Darren Going for Gold’ printed on the front, along with the club crest.
Darren said it was great to see the club giving so many lads a taste of boxing.
“I knew that when I first walked into this gym that I wanted to box in the Olympics and in August I will achieve that dream,” he told Dublin People Sport.
“If I can have an influence on these young lads fulfilling their dreams, I'll be happy for them and my club.”
Meanwhile, at the end of the season, the St Saviour’s club will bring local kids to Dundalk on a trip where they will enjoy soccer and ice-skating.
