A
VERITABLE feast of entertainment is planned in Dublin City Centre to
celebrate the Chinese New Year which begins on February 7.The Dublin Chinese New Year Festival Association is liaising with Dublin City Council to bring an exciting and dynamic programme of events to the capital for the celebrations. The colourful festival offers many cultural features and community activities in a weeklong extravaganza of film, arts, culture and sports. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke, in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, his Excellency Liu Biwei, officially launched the festival at City Hall last Tuesday. The venue was awash with traditional Chinese decoration, colour and native entertainment, with information booths on all that the week’s events have to offer. Mayor Bourke said the celebration was an expression of the positive contribution of the Chinese population to the life of Dublin city. “It is great to see Dublin City Council’s Intercultural Relations Unit organising such an important integrative festival in the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008,” he said. Among the festival’s highlights are the Chinese Film Festival in the IFI, the launch of the Beijing Olympics 2008 pack in UCD and the Chinese Carnival in Smithfield. The Chinese Film Festival will run from February 1–7 at the Irish Film Institute Temple Bar. February 1 will see the opening of the festival, with the first of eight screenings of director Jia Zhang Ke’s new film, ‘Still Life’. The Chinese Children’s Art Workshop will take place in Dublin City Hugh Lane Art Gallery on February 2 and 3. The workshops are based on Chinese arts and crafts and will allow children of all ages to learn some traditional Chinese crafts in the beautiful setting of the art gallery. On February 3 an international table tennis tournament will take place at the Sports Recreation Centre, Blackheath Drive, Clontarf. The tournament is organised by the Chinese Irish Sports Association in association with Leinster Table Tennis League, Dublin City Council and Show Racism the Red Card. All nationalities are welcome. On February 5, Dublin City Council, UCD, the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Chinese Embassy in Ireland will officially launch the Beijing Olympic Games official pack. Children from schools around Dublin will take part in a sports day, gaining experience of six various Olympic sports. Perhaps one of the more spectacular events will take place on February 6, which is Chinese New Year’s Eve, when a Dragon Boat competition sponsored by Tiger Beer will be held on the River Liffey. This promises to be a fun filled session for all the family at the new extensive docklands. The Chinese Irish Cultural Academy in co-operation with the Irish FuJian Business Association and the Irish FuQing Association, have arranged for top class performing artists from the Sichuan Province to perform during the Chinese New Year. The main event will take place at the RDS on February 5 at 6.45pm. Meanwhile, according to the Chinese Zodiac, 2008 is the Year of the Rat. It is deemed an honour to be born in the Year of the Rat and it is considered a privilege to be associated with a rat. |
