Metro North fears allayed PDF Print E-mail

REPORTS that Metro North may be scrapped by the Department of Finance as a result of the downturn in the economy have been denied.
The development of Metro North to Dublin Airport is seen as an essential part of development plans for the airport and areas such as Ballymun, Glasnevin and Drumcondra.
Concerns that a deferral may be on the cards were allayed last week when the matter was raised in the Dáil.
“I was told that the Metro North project is progressing well and the target date for completion for the project is 2013,” said local TD Roisin Shortall (Lab).
“There is a general view that with the slowdown of the economy and with a string of recent bad news, that Government ministers are looking to save money across the board.
“There is a danger that large transport projects like Metro North could be delayed or even scrapped.”
Deputy Shortall said it was crucial that the project goes ahead as planned and to budget.
“One of my biggest concerns is that the cost doesn't spiral out of control,” she said.
“In recent years we have seen numerous transport projects, such as the Port Tunnel, over-spend on a massive scale.
“Now more than ever there is a clear need for value for money.”
The Department of Finance confirmed that the Metro North project is going ahead as planned.
