Dublin Bus confirms 41X application PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 July 2008
DUBLIN Bus has confirmed to Northside People that it is currently in the process of submitting an application to use Dublin Port Tunnel for its outbound journeys on the 41X route.
The express service linking Swords to Belfield has been granted a licence to use the tunnel on inbound journeys by the Department of Transport but due to competition laws cannot conflict with the private Swords Express service on the evening return journey.
The news will further frustrate Swords commuters who believed that the saga had finally ended last month. They had been campaigning tirelessly for the service to be resumed over the last few months.
As the tunnel can only be used on inbound journeys, they will now face the same traffic nightmares on their return home until the ‘outbound’ problems are sorted.
The 41X bus route can cut journey time by up to 50 minutes during rush hour by using the tunnel.
Cllr Clare Daly (SP) said the move does not make any sense and will only serve to further infuriate Swords commuters.
“This is a public bus service funded by taxpayers’ money that is not allowed to use a tunnel built with taxpayers’ money,” argued Cllr Daly.
“This situation is a disgrace. It is a saga that has been going on for months and just when it could not get more ridiculous there is another twist in the tale.
“It is only commuters who will suffer as a result of this decision,” added Cllr Daly.
Senator Brendan Ryan (Lab) has also slammed the decision by the Department of Transport, which he says is progress but only goes half way towards providing the necessary service.
“To say that the proposed 41X route does not conflict with the private Swords Express service in the mornings, but does conflict with them in the evening is nonsensical,” Senator Ryan stated.
“This fudge is a further example of how far the Government is prepared to go to appease the private sector at the expense of the commuting public, who have voted with their feet in demanding an efficient service to meet their reasonable requirements.”
Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy (FF) has called on Dublin Bus to take urgent steps to ensure that the 41X service can use the Dublin Port Tunnel during peak evening journeys.
