MRBI research shows that 41 per cent of Irish adults aged 15 plus wear
earphones regularly and a massive 82 per cent in the 15 to 24 age
bracket are wearing earphones more than once a week.Joyce Kenny, from Skerries, decided to do something about her hearing difficulties for the sake of her children. When Joyce was 17, she contracted an infection in her ears that left her temporarily deaf. “Following that, I was working on a switchboard when my hearing completely went,” said Joyce. “I was terrified and had to be brought home. “Following an operation in my 20s, there was further deterioration. “Some people would get annoyed with me if I asked them to repeat themselves; they would treat me like an idiot, but I’d lost my hearing not my brain.” Joyce was very embarrassed about her hearing aid. “I used to wear my hair long to cover it,” she stated. “However, the aids I have now are small – so small in fact that when I told my boss that I needed time off to get the tone changed on my hearing aid he had no idea I had one in the first place.” Lisa Harvey is a 24-year-old assistant accountant, from Dublin, who wears a hearing aid. When Lisa was just 11 she had the measles, which damaged her hearing. “They only discovered that I had a hearing problem when they did a routine hearing test at school,” she said. “Otherwise, I might not have known for years. “I’ve also developed tinnitus which is a ringing in the ears which is often an indication of a hearing loss. “I got those horrible big aids when I was young and I never wore them. “I just hated them and I would have stuck out like a sore thumb in school.” However, Lisa acquired new hearing aids in August, which she says have made a world of difference. “The difference is very significant,” she added. “It took a few weeks to get used to them. Now I could not do without them. “The biggest surprise was when I got the aids, I could hear my flatmate singing in the shower. I never new he sung before.” As part of the initiative, TV3’s Mark Cagney and 2FM’s Jenny Greene are lending their support to encourage people to have their hearing checked should they have a suspicion that they may have a hearing problem and to safeguard against doing damage to their hearing. Hidden Hearing is also making a special public information leaflet available titled ‘Have You Heard?’ The leaflet outlines the basic facts that you need to know about your hearing, featuring a simple self-test on noise levels that can damage hearing. The leaflet is available by calling freephone 1800 882 884 or by emailing hearingaware@ hiddenhearing.ie and through GPs or Hidden Hearing clinics nationwide. |
