RESIDENTS in a Northside housing estate were perplexed to find an inflatable life raft that had been abandoned on their green space recently.
The life raft, similar to the type commonly found on large boats, appeared in the middle of the night at Rathvale Park, Ayrfield, leaving gardai and local residents at a loss as to where it had come from.
It contained a number of distress flares, along with a gas container, which could have been very dangerous if they had fallen into the wrong hands.
The origin of the life raft is something of a mystery, as Rathvale estate is almost two miles from the sea.
It is possible that the life raft was taken from a local boat and the owner may be unaware that this important piece of emergency life-saving equipment is missing.
Cllr Larry O’Toole (SF) said he was puzzled as to how the life raft ended up on the green space and noted the seriousness of the situation.
"I was contacted by a number of residents from Rathvale Park on the morning of the find,” stated Cllr O’Toole.
“I contacted the gardai and Dublin City Council and have to compliment them on their speedy response.
“There were flares attached to the raft, some of which had been set off during the night, and there was also a gas appliance attached."
Cllr O’Toole said that to leave this potentially dangerous equipment lying about was a very irresponsible act.
“What could have been a very dangerous situation was thankfully dealt with by the city council and the gardaí," he added.
A spokesman for the gardai at Coolock told Northside People that they were currently in possession of the life raft, but were unable to confirm if they had located its owner.
