Book highlights Ballymun’s diversity PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 July 2008
A NEW book has been launched to acknowledge the diverse community within Ballymun.
‘Festivals and Traditions from Near and Far’ is an initiative of the Ballymun Adult Read and Write Scheme.
The book, compiled by the scheme’s students who hail from various nations across the globe, is a collection of interesting accounts from their homelands.
Four of the students featured in the collection read an extract from the book at the launch, which was held on June 19.
According to a spokesperson for the scheme, the book was a thoroughly worthwhile experience.
“For the students, the writing of these stories was a very important part in the enriching experience of returning to education, or learning English to participate in the community,” it was stated.
Mary Love, Adult Literacy Organiser for Ballymun praised all of those involved in the production of the book.
“Not only are we celebrating the work of the scheme participants but raising awareness locally about the availability of help for adults who wish to improve their skills,” she said.
“We are always eager to work with agencies as we see literacy in Ballymun as everyone’s concern.”
Well-know Fair City actress and popular author Claudia Carroll was on hand to offer some encouraging words of advice at the launch of the book.
