Art gallery looking for new home

THE owner of a successful art gallery in Dún Laoghaire which exhibited the creative talent of dozens of local budding young artists is looking for a new home.
The Expose Yourself gallery in Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre closed its doors for the last time on Sunday June 22 after rental negotiations were unsuccessful for its owner, Karen Harper.
Karen, who is also the founder of the Irish Craft Association, contacted Southside People in the hope that a benevolent landlord could provide the gallery with a new home at reasonable rental price.
Describing the kind of art previously on display at Expose Yourself she said: “We would exhibit abstract pieces but we also have some beautiful spot-on paintings that you would think were photographs because the quality was so good.
“Then we would have loads of different types of photography. We also ran a shop there as well. We had glass sculpture, objects made out of paper and things like hand painted silk scarves and that stuff flew out the door.”
Platform
Despite selling almost 400 works of art in the six months since it was established, Karen said the gallery was never about making money but instead was a platform for artists to get their work seen by the public.
Artists rented their space from the gallery and eventually it was hoped it would become self-sufficient.
“Time did not allow for the business to move into profit and so it is with deep regret that the gallery must move on," explained Karen.
She said that a lot of the artists exhibiting their work at the gallery were talented, young local people who never had their creations displayed before.
Karen explained that the gallery is free standing and can be made as big or small as is required. The panels from which the pictures hang measure 8ft square by 7ft high, holding a total of eight artists’ work at one time.
Karen suggested that perhaps a property developer might be in a position to offer them accommodation.
“There is always somewhere with a ground floor with big windows.” she said. “If there was somewhere that could gives us an affordable rent, the gallery could continue easily.
“Everyone would benefit, artists and customers alike.”
