LUCAN Sarsfields earned the coveted Purcell Cup last Sunday week in the Division 1 Féile Camogie Final at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise. The Dublin team overcame Galway side, Mullagh, 2-3 to 1-1 in a hard fought battle that was highly competitive and skilful. Sarsfields got off to a great start when they opened with a goal, Sarah Courtney rattling the net with a lobbing ball into the top corner. Mullagh responded with a point from captain, Rachel Monaghan, who led by example with a great score. Ailish O’Grady showed she had a very steady hand when she caught the sliotar, turned and pucked it over the bar from the 21-metre line. Rachel Monaghan sent the ball over the bar for Mullagh to level the scores. Orla Hobbins followed this score with a goal to put Mullagh in the lead. However, Mullagh missed a goal shot just before half-time with the kick coming after the referee’s whistle. Mullagh led 1-2 to 1-1 at the interval. Lucan Sarsfields started the second half impressively. Alison Twomey raised the green flag and her teammates followed this goal with two points, the first coming from Lynsey Jordan and the second from Tara Keenan. Lucan Sarsfields’ improved second half performance saw them deservedly take home the Purcell Cup.
