judo.jpgA NORTH county Dublin martial arts club has been crowned Celtic Open champions.
Lusk Judo Club added to its medal tally by winning gold in the Hitachi-sponsored Celtic Open Judo Championship, an All-Ireland senior team competition between the top clubs in Ireland.
The Lusk team members were Ellie Dennis, Johnny Dennis, Gerard Turner, Tommy Dennis and Darren Flynn.
Jack Dennis, four times and current World Masters Champion and his club, Lusk Judo Kan, are no strangers to competition.
Regular winners both at national and international competitions, the club is held in high regard throughout the judo world.
Mr Dennis said: “The weight categories meant that many of the team competed against much heavier and stronger players, but once our team saw that the first prize included Hitachi-sponsored power drills, the opposition didn't stand a chance.”
Each of the five rounds and the majority of the 25 fights were won inside the distance with Ippon (perfect technique) throws.
Tommy Dennis won the award for throw of the tournament, a spectacular James Bond like Tomoe-Nage (stomach throw) in the final round.
Meanwhile, Jack Dennis is defending his World Masters title in Belgium soon after which Lusk Judo Club will close for the summer.
Anyone interested in participating in judo is welcome. Classes for both children and adults in ‘The Gentle Way’, the martial art created by the Japanese Minister for Education, restart in September in Carnegie Library, Lusk Village Green.
