Author aims for debut novel success

A NORTHSIDE author is hoping that her debut novel will become a huge success this summer.
Michelle Jackson, from Howth, launched ‘Two Days in Biarritz’ at a ceremony in Howth Yacht Club last week.
Local business leaders, friends, authors and representatives of the French embassy attended.
The book promises all the elements of a block-busting summer read, chronicling the lives of two best friends as they journey through deception, love and betrayal in modern Dublin and the South of France.
A large part of the book is based in locations that Howth locals will be very familiar with, as Michelle has lived in the area all her life.
However, she pointed out that while the settings are based on real life, the characters are very much fictional.
“I think that every writer puts themselves into their work to a great extent,” she told Northside People.
“But I feel like my characters have taken on a life of their own in this novel.
“They can do things that would even shock me and I’m sure will shock the readers.”
Michelle believes that her book would make a good poolside read for anyone this summer.
“Anyone from Dublin might be particularly interested in the story and there are some great twists in it,” she promised.
Michelle wrote the book in five months and spent another six months looking for a publisher. Poolbeg duly snapped it up as part of a three-book deal.
“It was my first book so I was so happy to get a deal,” she added.
“I have been writing for three years now while working part-time as an art teacher in Malahide.
“I have my second book finished already and it’s going to continue on the holiday theme but set in New York this time.
“I think there is something exciting about going away so that’s what I write about.”
Michelle’s second novel, ‘Three Nights in New York’, will be available in October 2008 in select stores only and will be released nationwide in spring 2009.
In this piece of work, she’s promising plenty of shopping and romance.
Meanwhile, the north county Dubliner is hoping to start work on her third book at a writers’ centre in Monaghan after taking a much-needed break.
And a children’s book written by Michelle, entitled ‘Kangaroo Stew’, will be published in September.
‘Kangaroo Stew’ tells the tale of a little prince called Zack and his pet Kangaroo.
The story is written in rhyme and illustrated by Ruthie Keating, and is sure to provide a great bedtime story for children.
