A whopping e7 million is to be in a new Dublin 15-based water research facility. Blue Chip giant IBM last week revealed its ambitious plan to establish a ‘Global Centre of Excellence for Water Management’ in Mulhuddart. The Irish Development Agency (IDA) is fully backing the plans for the facility, which will include the creation of almost 20 research and development positions. IBM said the facility would focus mainly on research and services for monitoring, managing and forecasting environmental challenges such as the movement of pollutants in fresh water, marine and oceanic environments. The Mulhuddart facility will also promote collaborations between the Government and third level institutions such as Dublin City University (DCU) and University College of Dublin (UCD) in an effort to improve water quality and water system performance. Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan (FF) warmly welcomed the announcement. “Choosing Ireland as the preferred location for this global research centre is a significant strategic win for IBM Ireland and IDA Ireland,” Minister Lenihan said. “It also positions Ireland at the centre of IBM’s emerging business strategy and enhances the country’s reputation globally as a research and development location for emerging ‘Green Technologies’.” He added: “This investment by IBM is extremely important for Ireland, ensuring further diversification of IBM'S Dublin Technology Campus Operations.” According to Dr Sharon Nunes, vice president of IBM Green Innovation, Ireland was the obvious choice for the massive facility. “The country’s track record in developing research and development projects, combined with its ongoing innovative approach to new business creation, makes it an ideal location for the centre’s research-based services,” she said. One of the centre's first projects is a collaboration with the Marine Institute on its national research SmartBay project, which is under development at Galway Bay. SmartBay is a system of sensors, robotic equipment and computation technology for monitoring and managing data such as tidal flow, wave heights and temperature. |
