Tallaght slammed as city centre improves in litter league report

Dublin City centre has scored its highest ever rating in a new litter survey, but the same report has blasted a Southside suburb, which was deemed a ‘litter blackspot’ and found to be the most littered urban area in the country.
According to the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey Dublin City is now ranked in 16th place of the 55 areas surveyed nationwide having languished as a blackspot for many years.
However, in contrast, Tallaght was named as the most littered area in the country achieving one of the lowest ratings since the league began six years ago.
An Taisce - which conducted the survey on behalf of IBAL - said Tallaght was suffering from “long-term neglect” with several areas “in a terrible state”.
The Tallaght result runs against the nationwide trend in the report, which shows that almost 60 per cent of Irish towns are deemed ‘clean to European norms,’ compared to seven per cent six years ago.
Tallaght was also named as one of only three litter blackspots in the country along with Roscommon and Tullamore.
Commenting on the poor result attributed to Tallaght An Taisce said: “It is a long time since an area surveyed in an IBAL anti-litter survey has scored so badly – there were just two sites which got the top litter grade.
“The majority of sites included had either serious litter problems or were litter blackspots – this wasn’t just casual discarding of litter but heavy dumping and long-term neglect.”
Local Fianna Fáil TD, Charlie O’Connor, said he was disappointed with the area’s ranking in the survey.
“The local authorities, the business community and the fast food outlets clearly have a role to play in ensuring the streets are maintained to a higher standard,” he said. “It is vital that we take the necessary steps to combat the litter problem and to take pride in our local community.”
In addition, the well heeled suburb of Ranelagh also fared poorly in the survey coming ninth from last nationally in the litter league table and was deemed to be ‘seriously littered’.
“This is a poor result for a long established residential area,” An Taisce said.
Meanwhile, Dún Laoghaire improved its litter ranking to 26th place. Well over half of the sites surveyed in Dún Laoghaire were ‘clean to European norms’.
