Significant changes were made to county council wards within Dún Laoghaire Rathdown last week following recommendations from the electoral commission. The two key terms of reference for the committees were to remove three-member local electoral areas nationwide in all but the most exceptional cases, and to try to align local electoral areas with Dáil constituency boundaries. As a result there will be no three seater wards within Dún Laoghaire Rathdown at the local elections next year. The committee recommended that no changes should be made to the boundaries or the memberships of the electoral areas of Blackrock or Dún Laoghaire. They also decided that two electoral divisions are to be transferred out of the Ballybrack electoral area. This means the Cabinteely-Loughlinstown electoral division will now be transferred into the Glencullen electoral area, which will consequently be increased from a three to a four seater. Contest In addition the Foxrock-Carrickmines division will now be transferred into the Stillorgan electoral area. At the same time, the Ballybrack ward itself will be reduced from a six to a five seater. Also, given the decrease in population that has occurred in the Dundrum electoral area, the committee recommended that the area should be reduced from a six to a five seater. It is believed that Socialist Workers Party candidate, Richard Boyd Barrett, will contest the council elections in the Dún Laoghaire ward and it is thought to have an excellent chance of winning a seat there. The dogged campaigner on local issues such as the Dún Laoghaire baths site and the Carlisle Pier almost caused a major upset when he narrowly missed out on winning a seat in the general election last year in the Dún Laoghaire constituency. Meanwhile, former Progressive Democrats councillor for Blackrock, Victor Boyhan, told Southside People that his party’s headquarters had asked him to look into the possibility of running in the six seater Dún Laoghaire constituency. The Progressive Democrats continuously held a seat in the ward for over 20 years until Cllr Mary Mitchell O’Connor defected from the PDs to Fine Gael earlier this year. Mr Boyhan said: “The party has to be pragmatic about this and decide which ward will give me the best chance of being elected but my feeling is that I will stay and slog it out in Blackrock.” |
